Briefly, the expression 'Medical equipment' can be elucidated as counting a vast range of instruments, equipment, machinery or apparatus used for medical and Para-medical purposes.
The benefaction of medical Equipment to health care includes:
• Screening: Screening for
disease, abnormality, or associated risk factor for these is asymptomatic
populations, such as mammography for breast cancer, prostate-specific antigen
testing for prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer devices and tests.
• Diagnosis: Determination
of the cause, nature, or extent of disease, for example, X-Rays for bone
fractures, CT & MRI for head injuries, Ultrasound for Gallbladder &
kidney stones, glucose monitoring devices for diabetes, Temperature monitoring
devices, Blood Oxygenation concentration measuring device which is mostly
using medical devices in this pandemic known as an oximeter.
• Prevention: Protection from
disease by preventing or reducing the risk of its occurrence or recurrence, or
reducing its safety, for example, vaccine delivery devices, PPE kits for
medical Staff, preventive devices, and sterilization Systems for Wards and
Operation rooms.
• Treatment: Resuscitate or
improvement of health disorders malfunctioning organs, including treatment of
acute diseases, revive of chronic conditions, and analgesia to alleviate or
palliate when treatment is not possible, or avoid collapse, such as kidney
dialysis, drug delivery systems, radiation therapy for a different type of cancers,
ventilators for supporting the human breathing system which is using during this
worst COVID condition and saving many lives.
• Rehabilitation: As the term
Rehabilitations means restoring, maintaining, or improving the ability of the
affected person to perform its functions, for example, ozone therapy for back
bone issues, heating therapy for different muscular issues, Spirometry therapy to increase
lungs volume, nebulizers, many sensory aids, and aids for impaired speech and
prosthetic body parts.
• Improvement of Quality of Life: Sanctioning patients to guide a full and better, more comfortable life, usually outside the hospital atmosphere and infrequently to full-time employment, by providing Nano-monitoring and drug delivery devices so easily the patient can use and carry that device in his daily life without any embarrassment, for example, a pacemaker for cardiac patients, insulin delivery devices for diabetic patients which periodically monitor the blood sugar and deliver insulin if needed, electrical and voice or remote controlling wheel chairs, etc.
• Reducing
the cost of Healthcare: As the cost
will be high if a patient stays prolonged so new technologies are reducing the
length of hospital stay, shortening surgical and diagnostic procedures and improving
the outcome of treatment, for example, lithotripsy in which shocks waves are
applied to breakdown the stones of the Kidney, ureter, Gallbladder & the small
particles of stones exit with urination, less invasive and surgical surgeries
like laparoscopy, etc.
Medical devices, Pieces of equipment & instrumentations are mainly designed and verified, and approved
by different Drug regulation authorities (FDA, ISO, CE, WHO & and every country has its own regulatory systems) with rigorous safety standards before
market it. For regulation of medical devices, there are several basic types of
medical equipment Classes such as:
Invasive types of equipment & Noninvasive Equipment, Therapeutic Equipment, Life
support equipment, Monitoring Devices, etc. For each type, there are
different SOPs for testing and
approval.
